Naked Body Guitars is located on Long Island, N.Y., Home to a prolific number of musicians, especially guitarists. I was introduced to the art of guitar refinishing when my friend wanted to re-do his' 62 R/I Fender Stratocaster. Long having a love and respect for guitars, I decided to tackle the job for him. Upon researching original finishes for guitars I realized that the nitrocellulose lacquer paint used on guitars was the same lacquer that I had worked with many years earlier when I did body work on my own classic cars. I had also used nitro lacquer through the years when doing furniture refinishing as a hobby.
Now it was just a matter of relating that erience knowledge & experience to the techniques of guitar finishing.
All finishes are nitrocellulose lacquer using formula matches of all Fender factory colors from the 50's and 60's, as well as Gibson factory colors and dyes. The next step was to learn about various techniques re required for different finishes as well as custom work such as 'relicing' guitars and applying tinted clear coats to replicate the authentic aging process that occurs with nitro finished instruments.
I personally finish every guitar from wood grain fill application right to the hand rubbed final finish. All the work from sanding to polishing is done by hand for the deepest, most glass- like shine that requires a minimum of maintenance.
I also believe that a guitar's look is a very personal decision for the owner and that is why I will discuss exactly what your needs are before undertaking the project. I have learned that the end result and satisfaction of my clients is well worth the time spent beforehand on
the desired outcome.
